What is the value of a formal public involvement program?

There is an increasing demand by the public to be informed and consulted regarding decisions that affect their communities and lives. Projects have been stalled or completely halted by citizens who have failed to be involved or whose concerns have not been addressed through a formal public involvement program. Public input is often vital to the completion of a project. Effective public involvement usually means that time and energy invested early on in the project will result in earlier project implementation and a significant savings in time, grief, and expense in the long run.

What goes into a public involvement plan?

Public involvement plans are intended to keep project stakeholders informed about alternative planning options, identify their preferences, concerns, and areas of agreement/disagreement, and promote the search for consensus. Project stakeholders often include public officials, community groups, businesses, and the general public. Most plans involve the production of outreach materials and techniques including: websites; newsletters, brochures and press kits; direct mailers; press releases, media spots, and public service announcements; fact sheets; PowerPoint presentations; and more. In some instances, it may be necessary to conduct focus groups, panels, workshops, or public opinion research to collect and analyze data that will enhance understanding of issues, perceptions, and preferences.

How do you set your fees?

Our fees depend on the unique circumstances of each project and client needs. In consultation with our client, a customized public involvement program is designed to reflect objectives, recommended activities and techniques, and the anticipated timing of those activities. On the basis of that approved plan, Olszak then prepares a scope of work and estimated budget. We again review that with our client before developing a final scope and estimate.
